Treat the symptoms of menopause with Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT)

You’ve probably heard of hormone replacement therapy (HRT). You may even have wondered if HRT can benefit you. For many women going through menopause, the answer is yes.

Menopause is a normal part of aging. In the years prior to and during menopause, a woman’s hormone levels can fluctuate up and down. This can cause symptoms such as hot flashes, night sweats, accelerated skin aging, bone loss, decreased muscle mass, painful sex, vaginal dryness, and irregular sleep. For some, these symptoms are mild and manageable, but if not, HRT can help.

What is HRT?

HRTHRT utilizes hormonal medications called modulators to replace estrogen and progestogen (such as progesterone) levels to compensate for their loss during menopause. These medications can be delivered as a pill, skin patch, vaginal ring, gel, or cream. The result is a reduction or elimination of menopause symptoms.

Aside from treating menopausal symptoms, such as hot flashes and vaginal atrophy, HRT has also been recognized by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to help with the prevention of osteoporosis, a loss of bone from aging that can lead to bone fragility and increased risk of breaks and fractures. Estrogen therapy can also help decrease the risk of certain health conditions, including heart disease, stroke, dementia, and mood changes in women experiencing early menopause or have lost normal ovarian function or had their ovaries removed.

Is HRT right for me?

For all its benefits, HRT is not right for every woman going through menopause. HRT should not be used by women who are pregnant, have or have had certain types of cancer, have liver disease, or have had a stroke, heart attack, or blood clots. Generally, HRT should be started before the age of 60 or within 10 years of menopause.
